Vilamoura is an area not actually a town as it is purpose built holiday complex with many private Vilamoura villas and Vilamoura apartments. This consists of 2000 hectares and makes up one of Europe’s largest single holiday complex. The area consists of pine forests and various vegetation, including marshland, which has been recovered. The town’s beach is on the Altantic Ocean, there are other nearby beaches. Falesia has red coloured cliffs whilst Olhos de Agua has pine-clad cliffs on 3 sides.

There is a large marina, which has many a shopping centre with many restaurants. They range from local dishes and many other international dishes for more varied tastes. The marina also hosts various boat trips. They have various excursions and also big game fishing. In 1993 the world’s largest black marlin catch from a boat chartered from the marina. It weighed 737 kgs and was 3.65metres in length.

There are also several championship golf courses to be enjoyed. And for the more adventurous there is parasailing and clay pigeon shooting plus more traditional pursuits such as tennis, horse riding, sailing and lawn bowling.

You can enjoy and flutter at the casino and gaming rooms. Plus go to see the cabaret nightly shows which there is a variety of. And of course there is bingo too.

There is also the Cerra da vila museum and archaeological Site. The Vilamoura area has been inhabited for thousands of years – as revealed by Bronze Age graves discovered in the Casão vineyard – the Romans were the first to settle at Cerro da Vila, as from the 1st century AD. Late-Roman, Visigoth and Moorish colonies were also established here and each period has left unmistakable traces of distinct civilisations at the site.

There are also various sight seeing excursions a available. Loule which is famous for it’s gypsy style market on Saturdays with daily market in its’ new market hall which also hosts music festivals in the summer. Also it boasts Brazilian style carnivals and 13/14th century castle.

Alte is situated at the base of hills to west of Loule, which is local styled village. Its has cobbled streets made up of whitewashed houses on the hillside. Local wildlife use the pool formed by the spring which the water eventually flows into a waterfall. The scenery is breath taking.

There is also faro, the old city is within the city walls with its cathedral and Bishop’s palace. The shopping centre is made up of cobbled streets and squares located just behind the marina.

Vilamoura is a bustling resort but it also has many chances to relax. So if you are a sporty type or just want to relax on the beaches or its many cafes you are catered for. There is also plenty of sight seeing and its local history, dishes and culture to take in at your leisure.
